Weather in Peru

Everything you need to know for your adventure

Climate Diversity

Peru is one of the most biologically and climatically diverse countries in the world. From the arid coast to the snowy peaks of the Andes and the tropical rainforest, here we explain what to expect.

Seasons in the Andes (Cusco/Machu Picchu)

The Andean region has two very distinct seasons that define the traveler's experience:

  • Dry Season (May to October): Sunny and clear days, ideal for trekking. Nights are cold, especially in June and July.
  • Rainy Season (November to April): Frequent rains, usually in the afternoons. The landscape becomes intensely green and there are fewer tourists.
  • Important Fact: February is the wettest month and the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance.

Coast and Tropical Jungle

The other regions of Peru offer completely different climatic experiences:

  • The Coast (Lima, Paracas, Nazca): From December to March it is summer, with plenty of sun and heat. The rest of the year Lima is often covered by a gray mist (garúa) but it almost never rains.
  • The Jungle (Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado): It is hot and humid all year round. The "low water" season (May to October) is better for hiking, while the rising water season is ideal for navigation.
