Tips for a safe and healthy trip

Your Health is Priority

Preparing for the physical and environmental conditions of Peru will allow you to enjoy every moment without setbacks.

Altitude Sickness (Soroche)

Cusco and many trekking routes are above 3,400 meters (11,150 ft). Follow these tips:

  • Acclimatization: Rest for the first 24 hours. Avoid intense physical effort as soon as you arrive.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water and the traditional coca tea (infusion of coca leaves).
  • Diet: Eat lightly (soups, easy-to-digest carbohydrates) and avoid alcohol on the first day.
  • Medication: Consult your doctor about altitude sickness pills (such as Sorojchi Pills or Diamox).

Water and Nutrition

Preventing stomach issues is key to keeping your itinerary on track:

  • Drinking Water: Do not drink tap water. Always use bottled or boiled water, even for brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach.
  • Street Food: Peruvian gastronomy is amazing, but be cautious with street stalls. Prefer places with good hygienic conditions.
  • Hand Washing: Use hand sanitizer before every meal.

Medical Requirements and Insurance

Before you travel, make sure you are up to date with the following:

  • Vaccines: If traveling to the jungle (Amazon), the Yellow Fever vaccine is recommended at least 10 days before arrival.
  • Travel Insurance: It is mandatory to have insurance that covers medical emergencies and evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
  • Personal First Aid Kit: Carry pain relievers, band-aids, insect repellent (for the jungle), and any personal medication.
