Journey at the Pace of the Andes: Exploring Inca Heritage & Cloud Forests
CUSCO – KM 82 (PISKACUCHO) – PATALLACTADay 01
The grand journey commences with an early 7:00 a.m. pickup from your hotel in Cusco. A comfortable private transfer transports you through the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing through local towns like Chinchero and Urubamba on your way to the official trailhead. The starting point at Km 82 (Piscacucho) is where you'll present your required permits, cross the Urubamba River, and finally take your first historic steps onto the ancient Inca Trail.
The initial hours involve a gentle 6 km warm-up hike, allowing for smooth acclimatization while you follow the banks of the river. This foundational trekking segment offers rewarding views of the mighty Vilcanota mountain range and the first glimpses of monumental Inca architecture. A revitalizing midday lunch is prepared by our chef near the trail, offering a crucial pause before you push further into the afternoon's destination.

The day's trekking concludes upon reaching the quiet campsite set beside the magnificent ruins of Patallacta (2,650m). After the tents are pitched, your afternoon is dedicated to an interpretive tour of this vast agricultural and military complex, providing a perfect historical context for the trek ahead. As darkness falls, you will enjoy a spectacular dinner, settling in early under the Andean sky.

PATALLACTA – WAYLLABAMBA – LLULLUCHAPAMPADay 02
A strengthening breakfast marks the start of a challenging but highly rewarding day. You begin with a sustained ascent through the picturesque Kusichaca Valley, an area known for its rich biodiversity and traditional Quechua communities. The path leads you through lush landscapes, following well-preserved Inca roadways as you make your way towards the small community of Wayllabamba, the final permanent settlement before the high passes.

After enjoying lunch in Wayllabamba, the afternoon brings the trek's most significant physical challenge to date: a steady, four-hour climb towards the highlands. This remote section winds through the gorgeous Llullucha Valley, where the environment dramatically shifts from cloud forest to high puna grasslands, surrounded by stunning, rugged peaks.

The day’s hard work culminates upon arrival at the scenic Llulluchapampa (3,800m) campsite. You will be welcomed with a hot tea service and snacks (known as 'tea time'), offering immediate relief and time to recover. The early evening is focused on a relaxing dinner and careful preparation for tomorrow’s daunting ascent over the highest point of the entire trail.
LLULLUCHAPAMPA – PAQAYMAYU – CH’AQICOCHA – PHUYUPATAMARCADay 03
This is famously the most arduous, yet most memorable, day of the entire trek. It begins with the steep, two-hour climb to conquer the formidable Warmiwañusca Pass (Dead Woman's Pass), the highest point at 4,215m. Reaching the summit is a profound personal victory, rewarding you with truly majestic, panoramic views of the colossal Andean peaks before you begin a steep descent into the lush Pacaymayu Valley for lunch and essential rest.
The afternoon restarts with an ascent to the second mountain pass, passing the impressive circular stone ruin of Runcurakay (3,800m), built into the mountainside. The trail then descends, leading you through an intricate stone staircase to the highly preserved ruins of Sayacmarca (3,600m). Your guide will illuminate the site’s history, showcasing the masterful engineering required to construct these settlements on the ridge.

The final leg of the day is a beautiful trek through a high-altitude cloud forest, featuring Inca tunnels and spectacular paths, culminating at the incredible Phuyupatamarca (3,650m) campsite, which translates to 'Town above the Clouds.' This campsite offers perhaps the most spectacular views of the trail, including the distant peak of Machu Picchu mountain, providing a magical backdrop for your evening.

PHUYUPATAMARCA – WIÑAY WAYNA – MACHU PICCHU – AGUAS CALIENTESDay 04
Day four is a historical descent into the heart of the Inca Empire. The morning trek takes you down magnificent original Inca staircases to the vast terraced slopes of Intipata and then onward to the remarkable complex of Wiñay Wayna (2,650m). This site, meaning 'Forever Young,' is one of the trail’s most beautiful and is fully explored during a guided visit before a farewell lunch with your porter team.

Building anticipation, the afternoon's short, flat trek through the dense, humid cloud forest leads directly to the legendary Inti Punku (Sun Gate) (2,720m). This is the moment you step through the stone frame to catch your first, highly emotional, and dramatic panoramic view of the majestic Citadel of Machu Picchu below—a sight that validates every step of your journey.

The final walk is a descent from the Sun Gate to the famous Guardian's House for the iconic photographs. From there, you will take a short bus ride down to the vibrant town of Aguas Calientes. You'll check into your comfortable 3-star hotel for a restorative shower and dinner, enjoying modern comforts before the grand finale tomorrow.
AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCODay 05
The final morning begins before dawn with an early bus ride up to the citadel to ensure you witness the unforgettable moment of sunrise over Machu Picchu (weather permitting). Once inside the ancient city, you will embark on a comprehensive two-hour guided tour, focusing on the most important temples, plazas, and sectors of this Lost City.
After the official guided visit, you will have ample independent time to continue exploring the different circuits of the citadel, reflect on your achievement, and absorb the unique energy of the place. You will then take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes for a final lunch on your own before heading to the train station.

The emotional return journey is via the comfortable Expedition Tourist Train through the breathtaking Sacred Valley to the station at Ollantaytambo. From there, a private vehicle will transfer you directly and seamlessly back to your hotel in Cusco, concluding your incredible 5-day Inca Trail adventure at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the maximum group size for shared tours?
Our shared tours maintain an intimate experience with a maximum of 8 travelers to ensure personalized attention from our professional guides and to adhere to park regulations.
How far in advance do I need to book the Inca Trail?
The official Inca Trail permits often sell out 6 to 8 months in advance, especially for the high season (May-September). We recommend booking as soon as your travel dates are finalized.
Are trekking poles provided or should I bring my own?
Quality trekking poles are not included and must be rented if you do not bring your own. We strongly recommend using them; they provide stability and significantly reduce impact on your knees, especially on descents. Please inquire about the current rental price through our contact channels when booking.
Is the entrance to Huayna Picchu included?
No, the entrance to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain is not included. These tickets must be booked several months in advance. Please let us know if you wish to add this, and we can check availability.
How do I prepare for high altitude?
We recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least 2-3 days before the tour, engaging in light activity, staying well-hydrated, and considering altitude medication after consulting your doctor. Our itinerary is designed to ascend gradually.
Are there any age restrictions for this tour?
We recommend this tour for participants aged 15 and above due to the altitude and amount of walking. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
What happens if I miss the return train due to an unforeseen event?
We always recommend travel insurance. Train tickets cannot be reprogrammed within 24 hours of departure, so you would need to purchase a new ticket (either in Aguas Calientes or from Cusco). As your agency, we will provide all necessary assistance to manage the situation.
Are there meal options for specific diets (vegetarian, vegan, etc.)?
Our dedicated cook prepares fresh, nutritious, and abundant meals using locally sourced ingredients. We comfortably accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs with advance notice. Please inform us of any restrictions during your booking.
What should I do if I get separated from the group during the group tour?
On group tours, your guide will provide you with an emergency contact number at the start. If you get lost, call that number immediately or head to a main exit or the park ranger's post for assistance.
