Your Sacred Valley adventure begins with a comfortable private pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 7:30 AM. Settle in as you travel through the Andean highlands toward the legendary Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Stop at the stunning Taray Lookout for panoramic views of the Sacred Valley stretching below. The valley floor, framed by towering Andean peaks, provides a breathtaking introduction to the landscape that defined the Inca Empire.
Explore the magnificent ruins of Pisac, perched high above the valley. Your guide will lead you through the impressive agricultural terraces, ceremonial temples, military structures, and the largest known Inca cemetery. Marvel at the precision stonework and strategic positioning that made Pisac a vital Inca stronghold.
Descend to the colorful Pisac market, one of the most vibrant in Peru. Browse stalls overflowing with handwoven textiles, intricate silver jewelry, traditional ceramics, and locally grown produce. Interact with local Quechua-speaking artisans and discover unique handcrafted souvenirs.
Visit the fascinating circular terraces of Moray, believed to have served as an Inca agricultural laboratory. The concentric rings create distinct microclimates at each level, with temperature differences of up to 15°C between the top and bottom. Learn how the Incas used this ingenious system to experiment with crop cultivation at various altitudes.
Discover the ancient salt-harvesting pans of Maras (Salineras), a spectacular sight of thousands of salt pools cascading down the mountainside. In use since pre-Inca times, these terraced evaporation ponds produce natural pink salt prized by chefs worldwide. Walk along the narrow paths between the shimmering pools for unforgettable photos.
Arrive at Ollantaytambo, the last living Inca town and site of a dramatic fortress. Climb the steep terraces to the Temple of the Sun with its massive monolithic stones transported from a quarry across the valley. Explore the narrow cobblestone streets of the town below, where Inca-era water channels still flow and original stone doorways frame daily life.
Check into your comfortable 3-star hotel in Ollantaytambo. Enjoy free time to wander the charming town, have dinner at a local restaurant (not included), and rest up for tomorrow's exciting Inca Trail trek. Your guide will brief you on the next day's hiking details.
Wake up early for breakfast at your hotel in Ollantaytambo. Transfer to the train station for the 6:10 AM departure. Your guide will ensure all permits and documents are ready for the trek ahead.
Board the comfortable Expedition train for a scenic journey along the Urubamba River. Watch the landscape transform as you descend through the Sacred Valley, passing remote communities and dramatic gorges. Disembark at Km 104 (Chachabamba), the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail.
After registration with park authorities, explore the rarely visited Chachabamba ruins, a ceremonial water temple that marks the trail's starting point. Your guide will explain the site's ritual significance and its role as a checkpoint on the ancient Inca road system before you begin your ascent.
Begin the challenging 3-hour ascent on original Inca stone steps through lush subtropical cloud forest. The trail winds through a botanical wonderland of exotic orchids, bromeliads, hanging mosses, and giant ferns. Keep your eyes open for colorful hummingbirds, butterflies, and other cloud forest wildlife as you climb steadily toward Wiñay Wayna.
Arrive at the spectacular ruins of Wiñay Wayna (2,650m), the most impressive archaeological complex on the Short Inca Trail. This breathtaking site features cascading agricultural terraces, ceremonial fountains, and intricately constructed residential buildings clinging to the steep mountainside. Named after a local orchid, the site is surrounded by stunning cloud forest scenery.
Enjoy your well-deserved gourmet box lunch surrounded by the majestic ruins and cloud forest panorama. Recharge your energy and take in the spectacular views while your guide shares stories about the site's history and the journey still ahead to the Sun Gate.
Continue through subtropical vegetation on the final stretch to the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at 2,720m, the traditional entrance to Machu Picchu. As you pass through the ancient stone gateway, the entire citadel reveals itself below in a breathtaking panoramic view — one of the most emotional and rewarding moments of the entire journey.
Descend from the Sun Gate along the original Inca path toward the citadel entrance. Enjoy ever-changing perspectives of Machu Picchu and its surrounding peaks as you approach. Pause at the classic viewpoint for photos before exiting through the main gate.

Begin an immersive 2-hour guided tour through the most iconic sections of the citadel. Explore the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower (Temple of the Sun) with its astronomical observatory, the enigmatic Intihuatana stone (solar clock), the Temple of the Three Windows overlooking the valley, and the Sacred Rock. Your expert guide brings each structure to life with historical context, architectural details, and Inca cosmology.
Enjoy personal free time to wander at your own pace, revisit favorite spots, capture stunning photographs, and simply absorb the powerful energy of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and New Wonder of the World. Take in the extraordinary mountain scenery from every angle.
For those seeking a bit more adventure, take the optional 30-minute round trip walk to the Inca Bridge — a dramatic stone path carved into a sheer cliff face with a retractable log bridge. This lesser-visited site offers thrilling views and a glimpse into Inca military engineering, designed to defend the citadel's western approach.

Essential tips to help you prepare for your Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail adventure
Start a fitness routine at least 4-6 weeks before your trip. Focus on cardiovascular exercises, hiking, and stair climbing. The Short Inca Trail involves a continuous 3-hour uphill climb through cloud forest. Strengthening your legs and improving your stamina will significantly enhance your experience.
Arrive in Cusco at least 1-2 days before the tour begins to acclimatize to the altitude (3,399m). Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, and try coca tea. The Sacred Valley on Day 1 will help your body adjust as it sits at a slightly lower altitude than Cusco.
Carry your original passport at all times – it is required at the Inca Trail checkpoint at Km 104 and at Machu Picchu entrance. The name on your passport must exactly match your booking details. Also carry a printed copy of your booking confirmation, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.
The best time for this trek is during the dry season (April to October). Expect sunny days and cold nights. The wet season (November to March) brings rain but fewer crowds and lush green scenery. Always pack a rain jacket regardless of season. Mornings at Machu Picchu can be misty and magical.
Carry cash in both Peruvian Soles (PEN) and small USD bills. ATMs are available in Cusco and Aguas Calientes but not along the trail. Tipping is customary: S/30-50 per day for guides, S/10-20 for drivers. Small denomination bills are useful for bathroom fees (1-2 PEN) and market purchases.
The Inca Trail is a protected archaeological zone. Stay on marked paths, do not touch or climb on ruins, and carry all trash out with you. Respect local communities and ask permission before photographing people. Help us preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations.

Key policies for your Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail experience
This is a summary of our key terms. For complete details and legal terms, please review our full Terms and Conditions document.
The Short Inca Trail is rated as moderate. It covers approximately 16 km (10 miles) with a significant uphill section from Km 104 to Wiñay Wayna (about 3 hours of ascending). The trail passes through cloud forest with well-maintained stone steps. While shorter than the classic 4-day trek, the continuous ascent can be challenging. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Trekking poles are highly recommended and can be rented for $15 per pair.
We strongly recommend booking at least 3-6 months in advance, especially for the peak season (May to September). Inca Trail permits are limited by the Peruvian government to 500 people per day (including guides and porters), and they sell out quickly. Last-minute availability is rare during high season. For travel between October and April, 1-2 months in advance is usually sufficient.
The Short Inca Trail (2-day trek portion within this 3-day tour) starts at Km 104 and covers ~16 km in one day, reaching Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate. The Classic 4-Day Inca Trail starts at Km 82, covers ~43 km over 4 days, crosses three high mountain passes (up to 4,215m), and includes camping. The Short Inca Trail is ideal for travelers with limited time or those who prefer hotel accommodation over camping. Both trails end at the Sun Gate with the iconic first view of Machu Picchu.
The highest point on this tour is the Sacred Valley area at approximately 3,700m (12,139ft). The Inca Trail section itself is at a lower altitude (2,100m to 2,720m). We recommend arriving in Cusco (3,399m) at least 1-2 days before the tour to acclimatize. Stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals and alcohol in the first 24 hours, and consider coca tea which locals have used for centuries. Consult your doctor about altitude medication (such as Diamox) before traveling.
Yes! You can leave your main luggage safely at your hotel in Cusco or Ollantaytambo. For the trek day (Day 2), you only need a daypack with essentials: water, snacks, rain jacket, camera, and sunscreen. Your overnight bag will be transported separately to your hotel in Aguas Calientes. We recommend packing light for maximum comfort on the trail.
There are basic bathroom facilities at the Km 104 checkpoint (trail start) and at Wiñay Wayna ruins (the lunch stop). These are simple facilities with a small fee (usually 1-2 PEN). There are no other bathroom facilities along the trail between these two points. We recommend carrying toilet paper and hand sanitizer as a precaution.
There are no water refill stations along the Short Inca Trail. We recommend bringing at least 2 liters of water per person. Your guide will carry additional water for the group in case of emergencies. Water purification tablets or a filtered water bottle are useful but not essential for this one-day trek, as 2 liters is typically sufficient. Bottled water is readily available in Aguas Calientes at the end of the trek.
