Money and Currency

Budgeting and local currency in Peru

Plan Your Expenses

Knowing the local monetary system will help you navigate Peru with ease, from local markets to luxury hotels.

The Peruvian Sol (PEN)

The official currency of Peru is the Sol (S/). Here are some key points:

  • Banknotes: Denominations are 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 soles.
  • Coins: 1, 2, and 5 soles, as well as cents (10, 20, 50).
  • Use of Dollars: Many hotels and agencies accept US Dollars, but it is vital that the bills are in perfect condition (no tears or stamps).

Cards and ATMs

In major cities, the use of cards is common, but it's always good to have cash:

  • Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. American Express has less acceptance.
  • ATMs: You will find ATMs in Cusco, Lima, and major tourist cities. The most reliable banks are BCP, BBVA, and Scotiabank.
  • Fees: Be aware that local ATMs and your home bank may charge international withdrawal fees.

Tipping and Currency Exchange

To get the best exchange rate, avoid airports and use authorized exchange houses:

  • Exchange Houses (Casas de Cambio): These are safe and offer better rates than banks. Street changers are also common but require caution.
  • Tipping: In restaurants, 10% is standard if not already included. For guides and porters, tipping is voluntary but highly valued for their hard work.
  • Small Change: Try to always carry small bills and coins for taxis and minor purchases.
