Getting around the land of the Incas

Connecting Destinations

From flights crossing the Andes to panoramic trains to Machu Picchu, here's how you'll move around Peru.

Domestic Flights

The fastest way to connect Lima with Cusco, Arequipa, or the Jungle:

  • Airlines: LATAM (the main one), Sky Airline, and JetSmart (low cost).
  • Lima Airport: Jorge Chávez is the main hub. We recommend arriving 2 to 3 hours early for domestic flights.
  • Baggage: Always check baggage policies, especially with low cost airlines, to avoid extra charges.

Panoramic Trains

Reaching Machu Picchu by train is one of the most beautiful experiences of the trip:

  • Companies: PeruRail and Inca Rail operate the route from Ollantaytambo or Cusco to Aguas Calientes.
  • Categories: From budget trains to the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham.
  • Tip: Book your tickets months in advance, as demand is very high throughout the year.

Buses and Taxis

For medium distances and urban mobility:

  • Luxury Buses: Cruz del Sur is the leading company for long journeys between cities, with very comfortable sleeper seats.
  • App Taxis: Use Uber or Cabify in Lima and Cusco for greater safety and fair rates.
  • Combis: These are small vans used by locals. They are cheap but can be confusing and very crowded for tourists.
