The Short Inca Trail is moderately challenging. You'll hike approximately 12km (8 miles) with 500m (1,640 ft) of elevation gain over 4-5 hours. While demanding, it's significantly easier than the classic 4-day trek which covers 45km and reaches 4,200m altitude. The maximum altitude on the short trail is only 2,730m at the Sun Gate.

Yes! You can add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain permits for an additional $60 USD each. These climbs are done on Day 2, giving you time after arriving the previous afternoon. Permits are limited and must be requested at booking time. The Huayna Picchu hike takes 2-3 hours round trip.
