Connectivity in Peru

Being connected is essential nowadays. Peru has a modern communications infrastructure in major cities.

SIM Cards and Operators

The most economical way to have internet is to buy a local SIM card:

  • Main Operators: Claro, Movistar, Entel, and Bitel. Claro and Movistar have the widest national coverage.
  • Requirements: You only need to present your original passport at an official operator store.
  • Cost: A basic SIM card costs around 5-10 soles, and data packages are very affordable.

Wi-Fi and Coverage

Internet access is common but varies by location:

  • Hotels and Cafes: Almost all offer free Wi-Fi to their customers. Speed is good in Cusco and Lima.
  • Remote Areas: On trekking routes or deep in the jungle, the signal will be limited or non-existent. Take the opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the landscape.
  • WhatsApp: It is the most used messaging application in Peru. Almost all businesses and agencies communicate through this channel.

Telephone Information

If you need to make local or international calls:

  • Country Code: +51.
  • Area Codes: Lima (1), Cusco (84).
  • Mobile Numbers: All have 9 digits and start with the number 9.
