Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do I need to acclimatize for this trek?
Yes, absolutely. Although the trek itself is not at extreme altitude, you will be hiking at a high elevation. We strongly recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400m) before the trek to acclimatize to the altitude, prevent illness, and enjoy the hike more.
How difficult is the Choquequirao trek?
This trek is rated Challenging. It is significantly more difficult than the Inca Trail. The difficulty comes not from the altitude, but from the steep, relentless descents and ascents. Day 2 (ascent to Marampata) and Day 5 (ascent to Capuliyoc) are particularly demanding. A good level of fitness is required.
What is the maximum group size for shared tours?
Our shared (Peru Reservations Crew) tours operate with a maximum of 12-16 travelers. This ensures personalized attention from our guides and a positive small-group dynamic. Private tours can be any size.
Can I rent a sleeping bag and trekking poles?
Yes. We offer high-quality 4-season sleeping bags for $20.00 per person for the entire trek. A pair of professional trekking poles can be rented for $20.00. We highly recommend using trekking poles to protect your knees on the descents.
What is the best time of year to hike to Choquequirao?
The best time is during the dry season (April to October). During these months, you can expect clear blue skies, stable weather, and incredible views. The shoulder months (March, November) are also possible, but the wet season (December to February) is not recommended as trails can be dangerously slippery.
Can I hire an emergency horse to ride?
This trek does not typically include a horse for riding. The mules and horses on the trek are designated to carry camping gear and food. If you are concerned about your physical ability, it is possible to hire an additional emergency mule for a portion of the trek at an extra cost, but this must be arranged in advance.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
We can accommodate all dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergies, at no extra cost. Please inform us of your specific requirements at the time of booking so our chefs can prepare accordingly.
