Key points from our booking policies
This is a summary of our key terms. For complete details and full legal terms, please review our complete Terms and Conditions document.
Yes, the Short Inca Trail (2D/1N) requires an official government permit, just like the classic 4-day trail. Permits are strictly limited and non-transferable. They sell out months in advance, especially during peak season (May-September). We recommend booking at least 3-4 months ahead to guarantee availability.
The Short Inca Trail is moderately challenging. You'll hike approximately 12km (7.5 miles) with 500m (1,640 ft) of elevation gain over 4-5 hours. While demanding, it's significantly easier than the classic 4-day trek which covers 45km and reaches 4,200m altitude. The maximum altitude on the short trail is only 2,730m at the Sun Gate.
No! This is one of the biggest advantages of the Short Inca Trail. Unlike the classic 4-day trek which requires 3 nights of camping, the 2D/1N trail includes a comfortable hotel stay in Aguas Calientes. You'll sleep in a real bed with hot showers and modern amenities.
Our all-inclusive package covers: private hotel pickup/drop-off in Cusco, round-trip Expedition train tickets, Inca Trail permit, Machu Picchu entrance, bilingual guide, all bus tickets, 1 night hotel in Aguas Calientes, box lunch (Day 1), dinner (Day 1), breakfast (Day 2), snacks, water, first aid kit, and 24/7 emergency support.
The Short Inca Trail passes through incredible sites: Chachabamba (the starting point with ceremonial fountains), Winay Wayna (one of the most impressive Inca ruins with terraces and temples), the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku) where you get your first view of Machu Picchu, and finally Machu Picchu itself with a comprehensive guided tour.
The minimum age for the Short Inca Trail is 12 years old. Children must be in good physical condition and accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The trek involves steep stone steps and moderate altitude, so we recommend this trail for families with older children who have some hiking experience.
The Short Inca Trail has lower altitude concerns than the classic 4-day trek. Starting at 2,100m (Km 104) and reaching a maximum of 2,730m (Sun Gate), it's more manageable. However, we still recommend spending 2-3 days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,400m) before your trek. Stay hydrated and drink coca tea.
If permits are unavailable for your preferred date, we can help you explore alternatives: choose a different date, book the Machu Picchu by Train tour (similar experience without trekking), or consider alternative treks like Salkantay or Lares that don't require government permits but still end at Machu Picchu.
Yes! You can add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain permits for an additional $60 USD each. These climbs are done on Day 2, giving you time after arriving the previous afternoon. Permits are limited and must be requested at booking time. The Huayna Picchu hike takes 2-3 hours round trip.
Pack light! Essential items include: valid passport, comfortable broken-in hiking shoes, layered clothing, rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, small daypack (25-35L), water bottle (2-3L capacity), personal medications, camera, and toiletries for one night. Leave heavy luggage at your Cusco hotel.
Cancellation policies: 30+ days before = full refund minus $50 admin fee; 15-29 days = 50% refund; less than 14 days = no refund. Important: Inca Trail permits, train tickets, and Machu Picchu entrances are non-refundable once purchased. We strongly recommend travel insurance to protect your investment.
