High-Altitude Trekking & Sacred Citadel DiscoveryCusco – Km 104 – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu PicchuDay 01
The adventure begins bright and early with a 4:00 a.m. private hotel pickup in Cusco, providing a scenic transfer to Ollantaytambo. There, you'll board the Expedition train, journeying through the Sacred Valley until the trek's starting point at Km 104 (Chachabamba). The initial leg of the hike involves crossing the Urubamba River and visiting the first Inca site, preparing you for the majestic scenery ahead.
The main challenge is the gradual ascent to Wiñay Wayna (2,600m/8,530ft), a breathtaking complex of terraces carved into the steep hillside, often called "Forever Young." After enjoying a well-deserved gourmet box lunch amidst the spectacular cloud forest surroundings, the trail continues, weaving through lush subtropical vegetation and offering incredible views, with the ultimate destination in sight.
The climax of the day is the final climb to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the traditional entrance, which offers the most famous and emotional first view of Machu Picchu bathed in the late afternoon light. Following this unforgettable moment, you will take a short bus down to Aguas Calientes for a restorative dinner and overnight stay in a comfortable 3-star hotel, ready for the main event tomorrow.
