Discovering Palccoyo's Multiple Color Peaks & Ancient Bridges
The day begins with an early morning pickup around 4:00 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco, marking the start of your high-Andean adventure. We travel in comfortable private transportation, witnessing the transformation of the landscape as we leave the city behind and head into the Southern Valley. After approximately 1.5 hours, we pause in the welcoming local town of Cusipata for a hearty and energizing buffet breakfast, ensuring you are well-fueled for the day's trek.
Our journey then continues for another 1.5 hours, traversing scenic Andean valleys until we reach the trailhead for Palccoyo, located around 4,700 m / 15,400 ft. From this point, the adventure truly begins with a pleasant and relatively gentle 20-minute uphill hike to the first viewpoint, offering immediate spectacular views of the first colored hills. We continue along a well-maintained trail for another 25 minutes to the main mountain, where a vast, panoramic vista of the three distinct, multi-hued peaks awaits, allowing ample time for appreciation and photography.
Before descending, travelers will have the chance to explore the remarkable Stone Forest, a unique geological formation of towering rock pinnacles that seems to pierce the sky, and view the striking Red River Valley in the distance. The return drive includes a culturally enriching stop in the charming town of Checacupe to visit its iconic Inca, Colonial, and Republican era bridges, a testament to Peru's layered history. Cancellation with 29 or fewer days' notice: No refund is available for the deposit or full payment. Non-Refundable Services: Due to their nature, some services such as the Inca Trail, train tickets, and flight tickets are not eligible for a refund under any circumstances once issued.

Our shared tours maintain an intimate experience with a maximum of 12 travelers (often much smaller) to ensure personalized attention from our guides and a comfortable experience on the trail.
How long is the hike at Palccoyo, and is it difficult?
The total trekking time is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours (round trip). The difficulty is considered Easy to Moderate. The path is mostly flat with only a gradual ascent, making it significantly easier and shorter than the Vinicunca trek, although the high altitude of 4,900m remains the primary challenge.
Is the Palccoyo tour suitable for children or older adults?
Yes. Due to the very short and easy nature of the trek, Palccoyo is an excellent alternative for families and older adults who are well-acclimatized to Cusco. We recommend consulting a doctor for participants with pre-existing health conditions.
How do I prepare for high altitude?
We strongly recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least 2-3 days before the tour, ensuring you stay well-hydrated, avoid alcohol, and consume light meals. Considering altitude medication (Soroche pills) after consulting your doctor is also highly advised.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 30+ days before departure receive a full refund minus the deposit. Cancellations made closer to the date have tiered policies. Please refer to our detailed Terms & Conditions for the specific policy details.
Are there bathroom facilities available during the tour?
Basic bathroom facilities are usually available at the breakfast and lunch stops in the local towns, and sometimes rudimentary facilities are provided near the trailhead for a small local fee (a few Soles).
Should I rent trekking poles?
While the path is easy, trekking poles are highly recommended for stability, especially at high altitude, and to reduce impact on your knees during the short descent. Quality trekking poles are available for rent at $20.00 per pair.

Macupicchu 2 day hike experience
I travelled with Sergio for a 2 day hike up Machupicchu. Sergio was very knowledgeable about the area and had lots of information to share while we were doing the hiking. He also was great at setting the pace so that everyone could make it to Machupicchu. The food provided was good and on the second day he made sure to have us first line to get into Machupicchu pichu for a truly unforgettable experience.

Epic hike in Sergio’s experienced hands
The 5 day Salkantay trek was a truly epic hike: spectacular scenery, lovely people with whom we are lifelong friends, and all guided by our fearless leader, Sergio. We had some unexpected landslide conditions as well as sickness among the group; Sergio was the calm and relaxed presence we needed, guiding us through safely. He paced the group so well, and we all made it to Machu Picchu triumphant. Sergio taught us a lot about the Peruvian culture and language, gave us tips and tricks for further travel, and also doubled as the group photographer. We would love to hike with Sergio again and would highly recommend Peru Reservations!

Unique once in a lifetime experience
Sergio is the man! My wife and I had a wonderful time at Machu Picchu! Both my wife and I were woefully unprepared, but Sergio took the time to make sure we were having a good time. He was incredibly knowledgeable and we learned a lot about the Inca culture and history. I highly recommend Sergio as a guide if you're looking for someone that knows the routes and history of such an amazing place.

Unique Experience
Very great experience very knowledgeable guide Sergio. We had two -day Machu Picchu trekking, he looked after us very well and explained a lot of stories and culture for us. The atmosphere is really nice. We’re like a family. He organized our visit very well. We caught the first bus heading to Machu Picchu, avoiding all of the crowd. So that we can enjoy the moment and take pictures.

Amazing Trek with Sergio!
We had such a fantastic experience with Sergio on the Salkantay trek! His deep respect for Pachamama really shone through and helped us to connect with the land we walked. He led us in guided meditation and offerings to Pachamama at different points along the trek, allowing us to slow down and fully absorb the energy around us. Thank you Sergio for an amazing experience, you made it truly unforgettable.

A wonderful trek with Sergio!
Sergio is a wonderful guide! We went on the 5 day/4 night Sallantay trek with him and it was an amazing experience. We were on a group tour and right away he made everyone feel welcomed and comfortable with one other, and it made the journey all the better to be hiking with our “trail family”. He shared Inca history with us and showed us some local customs as well—we particularly enjoyed the stories about the coca leaves as well as his deep respect for the Pachamama (Mother Earth). It was apparent from day one that Sergio’s main goal for the entire trek was to make sure everyone enjoyed the experience and he definitely delivered. He made sure to point out items of interest along the trail and had answers ready for questions anyone had, and even organized an impromptu soccer game at one of the rest areas! Machu Picchu is incredible on its own, but once we arrived it was soon clear that the experience was made even better by having Sergio guide us through the ruins and explain the history and architecture to us. We had some varying fitness levels in our group, but Sergio was able to make the whole group feel included for the entire trek. His style of guiding allowed everyone to hike at their own pace while still feeling like they were safe and part of the guided group through his in-depth knowledge of the trail system and strategic waiting/meet-up points on the trail. In addition to his guiding skills, Sergio is really just a cool guy and we immensely enjoyed chatting with him on the trails and hanging out with him at the campsites each night. I absolutely recommend Sergio as a guide to anyone visiting Cusco or the surrounding area—you will not regret it!
