Before You Go

Essential tips to help you prepare for your Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail adventure

Physical Preparation

Start a fitness routine at least 4-6 weeks before your trip. Focus on cardiovascular exercises, hiking, and stair climbing. The Short Inca Trail involves a continuous 3-hour uphill climb through cloud forest. Strengthening your legs and improving your stamina will significantly enhance your experience.

Acclimatization

Arrive in Cusco at least 1-2 days before the tour begins to acclimatize to the altitude (3,399m). Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, and try coca tea. The Sacred Valley on Day 1 will help your body adjust as it sits at a slightly lower altitude than Cusco.

Travel Documents

Carry your original passport at all times – it is required at the Inca Trail checkpoint at Km 104 and at Machu Picchu entrance. The name on your passport must exactly match your booking details. Also carry a printed copy of your booking confirmation, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.

Weather & When to Go

The best time for this trek is during the dry season (April to October). Expect sunny days and cold nights. The wet season (November to March) brings rain but fewer crowds and lush green scenery. Always pack a rain jacket regardless of season. Mornings at Machu Picchu can be misty and magical.

Money & Tipping

Carry cash in both Peruvian Soles (PEN) and small USD bills. ATMs are available in Cusco and Aguas Calientes but not along the trail. Tipping is customary: S/30-50 per day for guides, S/10-20 for drivers. Small denomination bills are useful for bathroom fees (1-2 PEN) and market purchases.

Respect the Trail

The Inca Trail is a protected archaeological zone. Stay on marked paths, do not touch or climb on ruins, and carry all trash out with you. Respect local communities and ask permission before photographing people. Help us preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Short Inca Trail is rated as moderate. It covers approximately 16 km (10 miles) with a significant uphill section from Km 104 to Wiñay Wayna (about 3 hours of ascending). The trail passes through cloud forest with well-maintained stone steps. While shorter than the classic 4-day trek, the continuous ascent can be challenging. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Trekking poles are highly recommended and can be rented for $15 per pair.

We strongly recommend booking at least 3-6 months in advance, especially for the peak season (May to September). Inca Trail permits are limited by the Peruvian government to 500 people per day (including guides and porters), and they sell out quickly. Last-minute availability is rare during high season. For travel between October and April, 1-2 months in advance is usually sufficient.

The Short Inca Trail (2-day trek portion within this 3-day tour) starts at Km 104 and covers ~16 km in one day, reaching Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate. The Classic 4-Day Inca Trail starts at Km 82, covers ~43 km over 4 days, crosses three high mountain passes (up to 4,215m), and includes camping. The Short Inca Trail is ideal for travelers with limited time or those who prefer hotel accommodation over camping. Both trails end at the Sun Gate with the iconic first view of Machu Picchu.

The highest point on this tour is the Sacred Valley area at approximately 3,700m (12,139ft). The Inca Trail section itself is at a lower altitude (2,100m to 2,720m). We recommend arriving in Cusco (3,399m) at least 1-2 days before the tour to acclimatize. Stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals and alcohol in the first 24 hours, and consider coca tea which locals have used for centuries. Consult your doctor about altitude medication (such as Diamox) before traveling.

Yes! You can leave your main luggage safely at your hotel in Cusco or Ollantaytambo. For the trek day (Day 2), you only need a daypack with essentials: water, snacks, rain jacket, camera, and sunscreen. Your overnight bag will be transported separately to your hotel in Aguas Calientes. We recommend packing light for maximum comfort on the trail.

There are basic bathroom facilities at the Km 104 checkpoint (trail start) and at Wiñay Wayna ruins (the lunch stop). These are simple facilities with a small fee (usually 1-2 PEN). There are no other bathroom facilities along the trail between these two points. We recommend carrying toilet paper and hand sanitizer as a precaution.

There are no water refill stations along the Short Inca Trail. We recommend bringing at least 2 liters of water per person. Your guide will carry additional water for the group in case of emergencies. Water purification tablets or a filtered water bottle are useful but not essential for this one-day trek, as 2 liters is typically sufficient. Bottled water is readily available in Aguas Calientes at the end of the trek.
