Your Sacred Valley adventure begins with a comfortable private pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 7:30 AM. Settle in as you travel through the Andean highlands toward the legendary Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Stop at the stunning Taray Lookout for panoramic views of the Sacred Valley stretching below. The valley floor, framed by towering Andean peaks, provides a breathtaking introduction to the landscape that defined the Inca Empire.
Explore the magnificent ruins of Pisac, perched high above the valley. Your guide will lead you through the impressive agricultural terraces, ceremonial temples, military structures, and the largest known Inca cemetery. Marvel at the precision stonework and strategic positioning that made Pisac a vital Inca stronghold.
Descend to the colorful Pisac market, one of the most vibrant in Peru. Browse stalls overflowing with handwoven textiles, intricate silver jewelry, traditional ceramics, and locally grown produce. Interact with local Quechua-speaking artisans and discover unique handcrafted souvenirs.
Visit the fascinating circular terraces of Moray, believed to have served as an Inca agricultural laboratory. The concentric rings create distinct microclimates at each level, with temperature differences of up to 15°C between the top and bottom. Learn how the Incas used this ingenious system to experiment with crop cultivation at various altitudes.
Discover the ancient salt-harvesting pans of Maras (Salineras), a spectacular sight of thousands of salt pools cascading down the mountainside. In use since pre-Inca times, these terraced evaporation ponds produce natural pink salt prized by chefs worldwide. Walk along the narrow paths between the shimmering pools for unforgettable photos.
Arrive at Ollantaytambo, the last living Inca town and site of a dramatic fortress. Climb the steep terraces to the Temple of the Sun with its massive monolithic stones transported from a quarry across the valley. Explore the narrow cobblestone streets of the town below, where Inca-era water channels still flow and original stone doorways frame daily life.
Check into your comfortable 3-star hotel in Ollantaytambo. Enjoy free time to wander the charming town, have dinner at a local restaurant (not included), and rest up for tomorrow's exciting Inca Trail trek. Your guide will brief you on the next day's hiking details.
Wake up early for breakfast at your hotel in Ollantaytambo. Transfer to the train station for the 6:10 AM departure. Your guide will ensure all permits and documents are ready for the trek ahead.
Board the comfortable Expedition train for a scenic journey along the Urubamba River. Watch the landscape transform as you descend through the Sacred Valley, passing remote communities and dramatic gorges. Disembark at Km 104 (Chachabamba), the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail.
After registration with park authorities, explore the rarely visited Chachabamba ruins, a ceremonial water temple that marks the trail's starting point. Your guide will explain the site's ritual significance and its role as a checkpoint on the ancient Inca road system before you begin your ascent.
Begin the challenging 3-hour ascent on original Inca stone steps through lush subtropical cloud forest. The trail winds through a botanical wonderland of exotic orchids, bromeliads, hanging mosses, and giant ferns. Keep your eyes open for colorful hummingbirds, butterflies, and other cloud forest wildlife as you climb steadily toward Wiñay Wayna.
Arrive at the spectacular ruins of Wiñay Wayna (2,650m), the most impressive archaeological complex on the Short Inca Trail. This breathtaking site features cascading agricultural terraces, ceremonial fountains, and intricately constructed residential buildings clinging to the steep mountainside.
Enjoy your well-deserved gourmet box lunch surrounded by the majestic ruins and cloud forest panorama. Recharge your energy and take in the spectacular views while your guide shares stories about the site's history.
Continue through subtropical vegetation on the final stretch to the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at 2,720m, the traditional entrance to Machu Picchu. As you pass through the ancient stone gateway, the entire citadel reveals itself below in a breathtaking panoramic view — one of the most emotional and rewarding moments of the entire journey.
Descend from the Sun Gate along the original Inca path toward the citadel entrance. Enjoy ever-changing perspectives of Machu Picchu and its surrounding peaks as you approach.
Take the shuttle bus down the winding mountain road from Machu Picchu to the town of Aguas Calientes. Check into your comfortable 3-star hotel and freshen up after the rewarding day of trekking.
Celebrate the day's achievement with a group dinner at a local restaurant in Aguas Calientes. Share stories and memories from the trek over delicious Peruvian cuisine.
Rise early and enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Prepare for a magical morning at Machu Picchu as you head to the bus station to catch one of the first buses up to the citadel.
Board one of the first shuttle buses up the winding road to Machu Picchu. Arriving early allows you to experience the citadel in the soft morning light with fewer crowds.
Begin an immersive 2-hour guided tour through the most iconic sections of the citadel. Explore the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower (Temple of the Sun), the enigmatic Intihuatana stone, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the Sacred Rock. Your expert guide brings each structure to life with historical context and Inca cosmology.
Enjoy personal free time to wander at your own pace, revisit favorite spots, capture stunning photographs, and absorb the powerful energy of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and New Wonder of the World.
For those seeking a bit more adventure, take the optional 30-minute round trip walk to the Inca Bridge — a dramatic stone path carved into a sheer cliff face with a retractable log bridge.
Take the shuttle bus back down to Aguas Calientes. Enjoy free time to browse the artisan markets, pick up souvenirs, or have lunch at a local restaurant (not included) before your return train departs.
Board the comfortable Expedition train for your scenic return journey to Ollantaytambo. Relax in panoramic windows and reflect on the incredible Andean exploration as the Urubamba River accompanies you through the valley.
A private vehicle will be waiting at Ollantaytambo station for a comfortable 1.5-hour drive back to your hotel in Cusco. Arrive at approximately 6:30 PM. Check into your 3-star hotel and rest up for tomorrow's Rainbow Mountain adventure. Your guide will brief you on the early morning departure.
A dark pre-dawn departure from your hotel in Cusco. Bundle up warmly as temperatures at this hour are near freezing. The drive south takes approximately 2.5 hours through the Andean highlands, passing traditional communities and high-altitude landscapes that gradually reveal the magnificent Ausangate mountain range.
Stop in the small town of Cusipata for a hearty traditional Andean breakfast. Enjoy hot beverages including coca tea to help with the altitude. This is your last chance for a warm meal and bathroom facilities before the trailhead.
Arrive at the Rainbow Mountain trailhead at 4,638m elevation. Your guide will give a brief orientation about the hike, altitude safety, and pace management. The air is thin here — take it slow and steady. Horse rentals are available for those who prefer to ride part of the way.
Begin the gradual ascent through the high Andean plains (puna ecosystem). The trail passes through stunning open landscapes dotted with herds of alpacas and llamas grazing on the sparse vegetation. The colorful mineral layers of the mountain gradually come into view as you ascend. Your guide sets a slow, steady pace appropriate for the extreme altitude.
Reach the summit of Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) at 5,036m — the highest point of your entire 4-day expedition. The panoramic views are absolutely breathtaking: layers of turquoise, lavender, red, gold, and green mineral deposits create one of the most surreal natural landscapes on Earth. The snow-capped Ausangate glacier (6,384m) towers in the background. Take your time to photograph this once-in-a-lifetime sight.
For those with extra energy, take a short detour to the Red Valley viewpoint. This lesser-visited vantage point offers stunning views of a dramatic red-hued valley that many consider even more impressive than Rainbow Mountain itself. The vivid crimson landscape stretches as far as the eye can see.
Begin the return hike back to the parking area. The descent is easier and faster, taking approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Enjoy the views of the Andean highlands and say goodbye to the alpacas along the way.
Return to Cusipata for a hot traditional Andean lunch. After the high-altitude exertion, enjoy a hearty meal featuring local cuisine. Rest and warm up before the drive back to Cusco.
Board your private vehicle for the scenic drive back to Cusco. Arrive at approximately 3:30 PM, completing your unforgettable 4-day Sacred Valley, Inca Trail & Rainbow Mountain expedition filled with memories that will last a lifetime. Transfer to your hotel or the airport as needed.

Essential tips to help you prepare for your Sacred Valley, Inca Trail & Rainbow Mountain adventure
Start a fitness routine at least 6-8 weeks before your trip. Focus on cardiovascular exercises, hiking, and stair climbing. Day 2 involves a continuous 3-hour uphill climb through cloud forest. Day 4 involves hiking at 5,000m altitude where oxygen is 50% of sea level. Train at elevation if possible and build leg strength.
Arrive in Cusco at least 1-2 days before the tour to acclimatize (3,399m). Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, and try coca tea. The itinerary builds altitude progressively: Sacred Valley (lower) → Inca Trail (moderate) → Rainbow Mountain (extreme). This sequence maximizes your body's natural adaptation.
Carry your original passport at all times – required at the Inca Trail checkpoint at Km 104, Machu Picchu entrance, and Rainbow Mountain checkpoint. Name must match booking exactly. Also carry booking confirmation, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.
Best time: dry season (April to November). Expect sunny days and cold nights. Rainbow Mountain is best October–November when snow coverage is minimal. Always pack a rain jacket. Day 4 starts at 4:00 AM in near-freezing temperatures – layer up warmly.
Carry cash in PEN and small USD bills. ATMs in Cusco and Aguas Calientes only. Tipping: S/30-50 per day for guides, S/10-20 for drivers. Small bills for bathroom fees (1-2 PEN) and market purchases. Rainbow Mountain trailhead has vendors selling snacks and hot drinks.
The Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain are protected areas. Stay on marked paths, do not touch or climb on ruins, and carry all trash with you. Respect local communities and alpaca herders. Ask permission before photographing people. Help preserve these UNESCO sites for future generations.

Key policies for your Sacred Valley, Inca Trail & Rainbow Mountain experience
This is a summary of our key terms. For complete details and legal terms, please review our full Terms and Conditions document.
Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,036m (16,522ft). The hike itself is about 1.5 hours each way on a gradual path, but the extreme altitude makes it challenging. By Day 4, you'll have had 3 days of acclimatization. We recommend arriving in Cusco 1-2 days before the tour. Coca tea and staying hydrated help significantly. The pace is slow and your guide monitors the group constantly.
Yes! Huayna Picchu can be added for an additional fee ($XX). Permits are extremely limited (200 per time slot) and must be booked months in advance. If you want Huayna Picchu, let us know at the time of booking. The climb takes about 1-1.5 hours round trip and is done during your Day 3 free time at Machu Picchu.
You can leave your main luggage at your hotel in Cusco (Day 1) or Ollantaytambo. For the Inca Trail trek (Day 2), carry only a daypack with essentials. Your overnight bag is transported separately to Aguas Calientes. For Rainbow Mountain (Day 4), a small daypack is sufficient as you return to Cusco the same day.
Arrive in Cusco 1-2 days early to acclimatize (3,399m). Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, eat light meals. Coca tea helps. The itinerary is designed to build acclimatization progressively: Sacred Valley (lower altitude Day 1) before the Inca Trail, then Rainbow Mountain (highest altitude) on Day 4. Consult your doctor about Diamox altitude medication.
Trekking poles are highly recommended for both the Inca Trail (Day 2) and Rainbow Mountain (Day 4). They significantly reduce knee strain on descents and provide stability at high altitude. You can bring your own or rent professional-grade adjustable poles from us for $XX per pair for the entire tour.
Yes! We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and most dietary requirements. Please inform us at the time of booking so we can make arrangements with hotels, restaurants, and for the trail box lunch. Our guides carry emergency snacks suitable for various dietary needs.
The Short Inca Trail section (Day 2) is at moderate altitude (2,100m to 2,720m), lower than Cusco itself, so altitude sickness here is uncommon. The higher risk is on Day 4 (Rainbow Mountain, 5,036m). Our guides carry supplemental oxygen, first aid kits, and are trained in altitude sickness recognition. If symptoms are severe, we arrange immediate descent and medical attention.
