Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley

Embark on an extraordinary full-day adventure to Peru's most iconic natural wonder. Vinicunca, the legendary Rainbow Mountain, stands at 5,200 meters as a breathtaking testament to millions of years of geological artistry. The vivid natural colors of its slopes — created by mineral sedimentation — form stripes of red, yellow, green, and turquoise that seem almost surreal against the Andean sky. This region is home to the Apu Ausangate, one of the most sacred peaks in Andean cosmovision, symbol of protection and fertility for local communities. After conquering the summit, explore the stunning Red Valley, whose ochre and crimson landscapes create an extraordinary contrast against the snow-capped peaks. This challenging yet rewarding journey takes you through pristine high-Andean terrain, offering encounters with herds of alpacas and llamas, and panoramic views of the majestic Vilcanota mountain range. Perfect for adventurous souls seeking to witness one of nature's most spectacular masterpieces.

Before You Go

Essential information to prepare for your Rainbow Mountain adventure

Altitude Acclimatization

Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,200m (17,060 ft) — one of the highest day hikes in Peru! We strongly recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Cusco before this trek. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and try coca tea to help adjust.

Physical Fitness

This hike is challenging due to the extreme altitude. The trail is about 6km round trip with 600m elevation gain. Good cardiovascular fitness is essential. If you struggle, horses are available for rental at the trailhead.

Weather Conditions

Weather at 5,200m is extreme and unpredictable. Expect temperatures from -5°C to 15°C, with possible snow, wind, and intense sun. Best season is April-October (dry season). Bring multiple warm layers!

What to Eat Before

We pick you up early, so have a light snack before. Buffet breakfast is included at Pitumarca. Avoid heavy meals and alcohol the night before — your body needs energy for the altitude.

Early Morning Start

Pickup is around 5:00 AM — it's early but essential! This timing ensures we reach the summit before clouds roll in and have the best lighting for those iconic colorful photos.

Health Considerations

Not recommended for those with serious heart or respiratory conditions due to extreme altitude. Pregnant women should avoid this trek. Bring any personal medications and consider altitude sickness pills.
