Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How difficult is the Ausangate 7 Lakes hike?
This hike is considered challenging primarily due to the altitude. You will be hiking above 4,200 meters the entire time, reaching nearly $4,850$ meters. The terrain is relatively flat with some ascents, but the thin air makes it demanding.
Do I need to be acclimatized?
Yes, absolutely. We highly recommend spending at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before attempting this trek to avoid severe altitude sickness.
Can I rent a horse if I get tired?
Yes, local community members rent horses at the starting point in Pacchanta. This is not included in the tour price and must be negotiated directly with the locals in cash (Soles).
Is swimming allowed in the lakes?
Swimming in the glacial lakes is generally not recommended due to the freezing temperatures and conservation efforts. However, you can enjoy the thermal baths in Pacchanta at the end of the hike for swimming and relaxing.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The Andes weather is unpredictable. We hike rain or shine unless conditions are dangerous. We recommend bringing good rain gear and warm layers regardless of the forecast.
Are there restrooms along the trail?
There are basic restrooms at the start in Pacchanta and at the lunch spot. During the hike itself, there are no facilities, so you will need to use "Inca toilets" (nature). Please bring a small bag for your waste paper.
What time do we return to Cusco?
We typically arrive back in Cusco between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM, depending on the group's hiking pace and time spent at the hot springs.
