Trekking the Sacred Mountain Route to Machu Picchu
The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is one of the world's most spectacular trekking routes, combining high-altitude mountain passes, diverse ecosystems, and the ultimate reward of arriving at the Lost City of the Incas. Begin beneath the towering Apu Salkantay (6,271m), cross the dramatic Salkantay Pass, and descend through cloud forests rich in biodiversity before reaching the magnificent Machu Picchu.
This 5-day adventure offers comfortable Sky Camp and Jungle Dome accommodations, expert bilingual guides, delicious cuisine prepared by professional chefs, and unforgettable experiences including Humantay Lake, organic coffee plantation tours, and the ancient Inca ruins of Llactapata with panoramic views of Machu Picchu.

The adventure begins with a very early pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Our comfortable private transport takes you on a scenic drive through the Sacred Valley, passing traditional Andean villages as the landscape transforms from urban to rural highlands.
After approximately 3 hours of driving, arrive at the charming village of Mollepata, the traditional starting point for the Salkantay Trek. The journey continues to Challacancha, where you'll meet your dedicated support team and mules before beginning the walk to Soraypampa.
Enjoy a revitalizing lunch at the exclusive Sky Camp in Soraypampa, setting the stage for the physical and visual intensity of the days ahead. The camp offers stunning views of the surrounding glaciated peaks and high-altitude grasslands.
The afternoon highlight is a challenging but rewarding three-hour round-trip hike to the spectacular Humantay Lake. This mesmerizing turquoise-colored glacial lake, nestled at the base of the massive Apu Humantay, offers a truly iconic and spiritual Andean experience. The ascent is crucial for acclimatization, providing a profound connection with the high mountains.
After descending from the lake, settle into your comfortable and private accommodation at the Sky Camp. As the Andean night falls, enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by your professional chef, followed by well-deserved rest under a canopy of stars, recharging for the trek's most demanding day.

Today is the most strenuous but visually stunning segment of the Salkantay Trek. Begin with an early breakfast and start the ascent toward the highest point of the entire journey. The trail climbs steadily through high-altitude terrain with increasingly dramatic views of the Salkantay glacier.
Reach the magnificent Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m.a.s.l.! At this altitude, you are surrounded by the immense presence of the sacred Nevado Salkantay. Participate in a traditional offering ceremony to the mountain spirits and enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views of glaciated peaks.
After absorbing the phenomenal views, begin a long and dramatic descent through changing ecosystems. The rocky, high-altitude landscape quickly transitions into the warm, lush environment of the cloud forest, an area rich in biodiversity. Pass through Huayracmachay and Chaullay, noting the profound difference in flora and temperature.
Enjoy a well-deserved hot lunch prepared by our skilled chef. The vegetation becomes increasingly tropical as you continue the descent, with orchids, bromeliads, and exotic bird species appearing along the trail.
The day's challenging hike concludes at the beautiful and exclusive Mountain Sky View camp in Collpapampa. Welcome with warm tea service before enjoying dinner. This camp offers a comfortable retreat in the milder climate, perfect for reflecting on the triumphant experience of conquering the Salkantay Pass.

The third day is a delightful change of pace. After breakfast, the trail leads you deeper into the lush, tropical Santa Teresa Valley. The path follows the course of the Santa Teresa River, offering a gentle downhill trek through vibrant jungle scenery filled with natural waterfalls, orchids, and exotic plants.
Pass through various local plantations, including coffee, bananas, and avocados, gaining insight into the agricultural life of the region. This segment is a true immersion into the high jungle, a beautiful contrast to the cold mountains of the previous days.
Enjoy a satisfying lunch in La Playa, surrounded by tropical vegetation. Sample fresh local fruits like passion fruit, bananas, and avocados that grow abundantly in this region.
The afternoon's highlight is an immersive, guided tour of an organic coffee farm in Lucmabamba. Learn about the entire process, from harvesting the bean to roasting and grinding, concluding with a tasting of some of the world's finest coffee.
The night is spent in the comfortable and unique Jungle Domes in Lucmabamba, offering a cozy shelter within the sounds and warmth of the rainforest. After a delicious dinner, enjoy the evening at camp, preparing for the final push toward the Lost City of the Incas the next day.

An early start is necessary for the challenging uphill climb to the Inca ruins of Llactapata. This section is pivotal as it offers the trek's first, unforgettable panoramic view of the Machu Picchu Citadel in the distance - a truly rewarding sight after days of trekking.
Arrive at the ancient Inca archaeological site of Llactapata. From here, enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Machu Picchu in the distance. Your guide will provide a brief history of this strategic site before the descent begins. Take memorable photos of this incredible vantage point.
The trail descends towards the Aobamba River valley and continues to the Hidroelectrica sector. Here, share a final meal with your support crew and say goodbye to the porters and horsemen who made your trek possible.
The last leg of the day is a pleasant, flat walk along the active train tracks to the bustling town of Aguas Calientes, nestled in the valley below Machu Picchu. This symbolic walk brings you directly to the gateway of your ultimate destination.
Upon arrival, check into a comfortable hotel for a proper rest, followed by dinner. The guide will provide a detailed briefing about the visit to Machu Picchu the following morning, ensuring you are fully prepared for the long-awaited climax of your Andean adventure.

The grand finale begins with a very early start to ascend to Machu Picchu (either by bus or an early morning hike) to catch the breathtaking sunrise over the magnificent Inca Citadel. Watch as the first golden rays illuminate the ancient stones and morning mist drifts through the terraces.
Your expert local guide will lead you on a comprehensive two-to-three-hour tour, exploring the principal temples, plazas, and terraces. Learn about the rich history and spiritual significance of this World Wonder, including the Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana stone, and the Temple of the Three Windows.
For those who booked the add-on, climb the famous Huayna Picchu (additional permit required) for spectacular aerial views of the citadel. Alternatively, hike Machu Picchu Mountain for an equally impressive experience. Both climbs take approximately 2-3 hours round trip.
Enjoy free time to wander the citadel on your own, soak in the majesty of the surroundings, and take those final, memorable photos. At the designated time, descend back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (on your own).
Board the Expedition train for the scenic journey through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo station. Enjoy panoramic windows and complimentary snacks as the dramatic landscapes pass by, reflecting on your incredible adventure.
Upon arrival at Ollantaytambo station, your private transport will be waiting to take you on a comfortable drive back to your hotel in Cusco. Arrive in the evening, filled with the sense of accomplishment from completing one of the world's greatest treks and having triumphed at the Lost City of the Incas!

Essential information to prepare for your Salkantay Trek adventure
This is a challenging 5-day trek reaching 4,630m altitude. Start training 2-3 months before with hiking, cardio exercises, and stair climbing. Build up to 6-8 hour hikes with a weighted pack.
Spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400m) before the trek. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, take it easy, and try coca tea. Consider altitude medication (consult your doctor).
Expect extreme temperature variations: -5°C at Salkantay Pass to 30°C in the jungle section. Be prepared for rain any time of year. Best months are April-October (dry season).
Consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations (Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid). Bring personal medications, altitude sickness pills (Diamox), and insect repellent with DEET for the jungle section.
Travel insurance is highly recommended. Ensure your policy covers high-altitude trekking (up to 5,000m), emergency evacuation, and medical expenses. Keep a copy of your policy accessible.
Your original passport is required for Machu Picchu entry. The name and number must exactly match your reservation. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your travel date.
Bring cash in Peruvian Soles for tips and personal expenses. No ATMs on the trek. Suggested tips: Guide ($8-10/day), Cook ($5-6/day), Horsemen ($3-4/day). Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory.
Book 1-2 months in advance for peak season (May-September). Unlike the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek doesn't require permits, but our Sky Camp and Dome accommodations fill up quickly.
Leave excess luggage at your Cusco hotel (most offer free storage). Pack horses carry up to 7kg of your personal items during the trek. Pack only what you need for 5 days.
