Wake to the sounds of the cloud forest coming alive. After breakfast, begin today's spectacular descent through multiple ecological zones. The trail follows ancient pathways used by Inca traders connecting highland and jungle regions.
Enter the lush subtropical zone of Chaullay, renowned for its exceptional coffee and fruit production. The vegetation becomes increasingly tropical with orchids, bromeliads, and exotic bird species. Visit a local coffee plantation to learn about organic cultivation and taste freshly roasted beans.
Enjoy a refreshing lunch featuring local tropical fruits like passion fruit, bananas, and avocados. The cuisine transitions to reflect the region's agricultural abundance. Try fresh-pressed sugarcane juice for natural energy.
The afternoon trek continues through bamboo groves and banana plantations. The trail descends alongside rushing rivers, with opportunities to spot exotic wildlife including hummingbirds, butterflies, and the elusive Andean cock-of-the-rock.

Essential information to prepare for your Salkantay & Inca Trail adventure
This is a challenging 7-day trek with high altitude passes. Start training 3-4 months before with hiking, cardio exercises, and stair climbing. Build up to 8-10 hour hikes with a weighted pack.
Spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400m) before the trek. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, take it easy, and try coca tea. Consider altitude medication (consult your doctor).
Expect extreme temperature variations: -5°C at Salkantay Pass to 30°C in the jungle. Be prepared for rain any time of year. Best months are May-September (dry season).
Consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations (Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever for jungle areas). Bring personal medications, altitude sickness pills, and insect repellent with DEET.
Travel insurance is mandatory. Ensure your policy covers high-altitude trekking (up to 5,000m), emergency evacuation, and medical expenses. Keep a copy of your policy accessible.
Your original passport is required for the Inca Trail permit at KM 104. The name and number must exactly match your reservation. Passport must be valid for 6+ months.
Bring cash in Peruvian Soles for tips and personal expenses. No ATMs on the trek. Suggested tips: Guide ($8-10/day), Cook ($5-6/day), Horsemen ($3-4/day), Porters ($3-4/day each).
Book 2-3 months in advance for peak season (May-September). The KM 104 Inca Trail permits sell out less quickly than full Inca Trail permits but are still limited. Early booking recommended.
Leave excess luggage at your Cusco hotel (most offer free storage). Pack horses carry up to 7kg of your personal items during the Salkantay section. Pack only what you need for 7 days.
